December 2, 2009 is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. In today’s world, slavery has a new name; human trafficking and it is occurring right here in our own backyards.
According to a 2007 Rand Corporation report, “the problem (of trafficking) is significantly larger than we know of in Ohio. The report suggested that there are as many as 3 to 10 trafficking victims for every one identified and that Columbus and Toledo are prime places for recruitment of kidnapping of sex trafficking victims.”
The Women’s Fund is a proud member of The Central Ohio Rescue and Restore Coalition (COORC) which focuses on public awareness, social services, law enforcement, and legislation and lobbying.
“The Women’s Fund stands with over 100 members, comprised of both concerned citizens and those who represent social services, faith-based, medical, and law enforcement organizations. We are standing in a time of true social change where we are changing the definition of the sex trade – from prostitution to human trafficking.” – Kelly Budros, Director of Programs.
Human Trafficking is modern day slavery and is a social disease that is plaguing our community. Today we ask you to stand up for the women and girls who are silenced in this underworld. Support rescue and re-integration programs such as COORC that give hope stability to those who are tricked into slavery.
Take action to stop human trafficking and help to save the lives of millions of women and girls who are trapped in a nightmare of abuse and torture.
